Lot Essay

The table, intended to accompany a Grecian sofa, has a single richly-figured mahogany panel running across the entire top, and with its pilaster-ends supported on Grecian-scrolled and reeded 'claws' it corresponds to Gillows' sketch-pattern of March 1807 accompanying the manufacturing costs for a 'Handsome Mahogany Sofa Table'. Although untitled the design may well be for this actual table (Gillows Estimate Sketch Book MSS no. 1810, Westminster Library).
