Lot Essay

Goedaert, a naturalist as well as a painter, appears to have lived all his life in Middelburg. Although his paintings are little known, his Metamorphosis naturalis, a three-volume work on insects published in Middelburg in 1662-9, contained some 150 engravings of insects previously drawn by him in watercolour. Only two other landscapes in oil by the artist appear to be known: one is in the Liechtenstein Gallery, Vaduz, the other is at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (see C.M. Kauffmann, Victoria and Albert Museum. Catalogue of Foreign Paintings. I. Before 1800, London, 1973, pp. 135-6, no. 154, illustrated). Apart from these, there appear to be only a few other known works by the artist: two flower still lifes in Dutch private collections, and landscape drawings in the Albertina, Vienna, the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam and in a private collection, Brussels (see ibid., p. 135).
