Lot Essay
We are grateful to Dr. Erich Schleier for proposing the attribution on the basis of a photograph. He compares the female heads, particularly that of the daughter on the right, to the ex-Heim Gallery picture, Arts asking protection from Jupiter against the Vices (see A. Cera, La Pittura bolognese del settecento, Milan, 1994, fig. 15). He also notes similarities with the female heads in Zenobia cured (see, E. Busmanti and C. Pierallini in the catalogue of the exhibition, Jacopo Alessandro Calvi. Disegni e Dipinti, Bologna, 1989) and makes a comparison between the daughter on the left of the present picture and the Virgin in the Crucifixion at the church of San Giuliano, Bologna (A. Cera, op. cit., fig. 13).
