Lot Essay
When sold in these Rooms in 1928 as the Master of the Bambino Vispo, the present panel was offered together with Seven Musical Angels, also by Rossello, and presumably cut down from the same altarpiece; the Angels, no longer with Saint Francis, later belonged to Han Coray, Erlenbach, Switzerland (sale, Wertheim, Berlin, 1 Oct. 1930, lot 15). Both panels were correctly identified as the work of Rossello di Jacopo Franchi by Professor Miklós Boskovits on a mount at the Frick Art Reference Library in October 1978.
