Gouache on paper, the prince sits in an interior on a chair, wearing a tall black hat, black coat over fawn trousers, his infant son at his knee, (some water damage, and minor marks), the sitter identified in a cartouche, signed by Mirza Baba al-Husayni and dated 1278

Lot Essay

Mirza Baba al-Husayni Isfahani is mentioned in Karimzadeh Tabrizi, (M.A.: The Lives and Art of Old Painters in Iran, London, 1991, vol.3, pp.1286-7, entry no. 1316). His works are dated between the years 1259-1273 AH (1843-1856 AD). He also worked on paintings in the Churchill Album, now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, (Robinson, B.W.: Persian Painting from Collections in the British Isles, London, 1967, no. 102, pp.81-83). A very similar portrait by this artist of Nasr al-Din Shah was sold in these rooms 19th October 1995, lot 107.
