PROBABLY MUGHAL OR DECCANI, 16TH/17TH CENTURY

The tapering straight blade with narrowing grooves along each side, a rectangular panel above inlaid with brass key-pattern, the handle very naturalistically cast in the form of a leaping lion, the contours originally heightened with brass inlaid stripes, considerable corrosion and loss of inlay, front paws missing

Lot Essay

The form of the hilt in this dagger is a simplified and probably earlier example of that seen in lot 131.
