The interior plain glistening white with the exception of an extremely elegant and strong black kufic inscription divided in four parts, together with a single scrolling black palmette leaf, the exterior plain white, repaired clean breaks, slight discolouration of some fragments, glaze remarkably well preserved

The inscription could be read as:'tajdidan' (renewal). It is the same as that on a small bowl in the sale, lot 157.

There is little extra to add to the description of this bowl. The size, wonderful calligraphy and remarkably preserved glaze combine clearly to demonstrate the beauty of these restrained bowls when they were made.

A thermoluminescence test performed on two samples taken from the foot of this bowl, on 21st September 1995, is consistent with the dating here.
