AN OTTOMAN ENAMELLED AND INSET GOLD ZARF AND SAUCER

The cup of typical form with four enamelled violet iris blossoms divided by floral sprays of emeralds, garnets and diamonds, the leaves of which extend beyond the rim to form an arcade, similar swags of stones below above a knop of garnets and diamonds, the foot with four panels of enamel divided by inset trefoils, the saucer similarly conceived to the cup but with eight irises and associated inset floral arcades, European import marks, negligible repair to enamels on cup, otherwise excellent condition
2½in. (6.5cm.) high; 3 5/8in. (9cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

It has been suggested that this item is of European manufacture. The marks do not accord with any known European centre, and the style of stone insetting in particular is typical of the Ottoman 19th century.
