Lot Essay

While a couple of small Iznik inkwells have been published, they have all been of a rounded form. The present example appears to be unique among published examples in its cylindrical straight-sided shape. Teh decoration is closely related to two Iznik candlesticks in the British Museum, both dating from about 1525 (Atasoy, N. and Raby, J.: Iznik -- the Pottery of Ottoman Turkey , London, 1989, figs.302 and 310). Even closer in the decoration of the body is a small jug in the same collection (Atasoy and Raby: op. cit, fig.325) dated to 1535-45.
