The brick-red field with a stylised inscribed hanging lamp, the sea-blue mihrab arch above containing floral motifs and serrated angular leaves, the brick-red panel above with four aubergine arches issuing stylised tulip motifs, in a golden yellow border of polychrome floral cartouches, divided by linked glass-motifs, between ivory flowerhead and S-pattern stripes, areas of wear, old repair and each end re-woven

Lot Essay

This rug has had the form of the mihrab changed. Originally it was of the stepped triangular form more typical of rugs of this group. At some stage, presumably in the 19th century to judge from the weaving, it has been altered into the form better known from Ottoman Cairene prayer rugs and their descendants.
