Lot Essay

This carpet was purchased in 1938, as antique, in Lanchow, Kansu Province, China, 1938, by the present owner's parents. At the time, it was described as a 'Wedding carpet'. They were told that the tradition was that the parents of the engaged couple each weave half the carpet before the wedding. On the square medallion a small table is placed for the wedding presents. The engaged couple kneel on the circular medallions in order to kow-tow to thank for the presents and for good luck wishes.
