The inscription on the case reads 'Tabatière en porphyre ayant appartenue à Wellington - Cette tabatière porte les noms des Généraux Anglais ayant fait campagne contre Napoléon de 1798 é 1813'. The decorative battle scenes carved on this box are reminiscent of those found on the Waterloo Vase at Apsley House.
