Lot Essay

Archduke Ferdinand (1769-1824), second son of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II, was a brother of Archdukes Franz and Charles (see lots 114 and 58). He succeeded his father as Grand Duke of Tuscany under the name of Ferdinand III, in 1791. In 1799, he had to flee from the French troops and did not return to Florence until his Grand Duchy had been restored to him under the Congress of Vienna.
