Lot Essay

This is after the full-length oil painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds in the Musée Condé, Chantilly.
Louis-Philippe Joseph d'Orléans was born in 1747, the eldest grandson of the Régent and his wife Mademoiselle de Blois (see lot 30). Under the Revolution, be became notorious for his opposition against Louis XVI and was known as 'Philippe-Egalité'. He voted for the death of his cousin King Louis XVI (see lot 111) but was executed on the scaffold shortly after Queen Marie-Antoinette, on 6 November 1793.
For a miniature of his eldest son, the later King Louis-Philippe, see lot 171.
Miniatures depicting Philippe-Egalité are extremely rare.
