Lot Essay

Louis-Philippe II d'Orléans (1775-1850) was the eldest son of Philippe-Egalité (see lot 129) and his wife Princess Louise-Marie-Adélaïde of Bourbon-Penthièvre. Married to Princess Marie-Amélie of Bourbon-Naples in 1809, he was King of the French under the name of Louis-Philippe I from 1830 to 1848. Quite early, he became rather unpopular and his nick-name of La Poire ('The Pear'), referring to his broadening jawline, fits in with the present miniature. After his abdication, he adopted the title of Comte de Neuilly and emigrated to England.

An enamel version of this miniature, also by Saint, is illustrated in C. Jeannerat and H. Clouzot, Miniatures and Enamels from the D. David-Weill Collection, Paris, 1957, p. 491, no. 351.
