Contemporary Milanese red straight-grained morocco, bound for Archduke Rainer with his arms blocked in gilt at the centre of the covers, surrounded by a wide gilt border, fan-shaped cornerpieces with pointillé work, and wide gilt fillets and elaborate floral tooling, the flat spine divided into six sections with fillets and roll-tools, lettered in two, the others with all-over gilt tooling, gilt turn-ins, light-blue watered silk doublures and endleaves, g.e. (slight split to upper joint). Provenance: archduke rainer, austrian viceroy of lombardy and veneto (1783-1852, binding).
A FINE MILANESE ROMANTIC BINDING, BOUND FOR ARCHDUKE RAINER, who was appointed Viceroy in 1817 and ruled until 1848, when he was forced out by the Risorgimento.
