JANIN, Jules-Gabriel. Voyage en Italie. Paris: A.Éverat & Co. for Ernest Bourdin & Co., 1839.

8° (253 x 163mm). Letterpress half-title, lithographed title with vignette, 14 steel-engraved plates after Harding, Prout and others. (Some spotting and browning.) Contemporary publisher's dark blue morocco gilt, covers with elaborate gilt-blocked frame of rocailles and chinoiserie birds, beasts and flowers, within a double blind fillet border, the flat spine similarly blocked in gilt and lettered, g.e., signed by Boutigny at foot of spine, and with label on front endleaf. Provenance: Selim Bodin (stamp on title).

FIRST EDITION in an apparently unrecorded French romantic publisher's de luxe binding. Boutigny was, according to Ramsden, the "leading exponent of the rocaille school of binding; much of his work was done anonymously for publishers."
