8° (255 x 164mm). Half title, wood-engraved title vignette and numerous initials and illustrations, steel-engraved portrait frontispiece, additional title, two maps and 22 plates. (Some browning and spotting.) Contemporary red morocco gilt by Giovanni Battei of Parma, covers with gilt border, central rectangular panel of inlaid black morocco, tooled in gilt, with centrally-placed intertwined M.L. monogram surmounted by an imperial crown, spine gilt in six compartments, lettered in one, g.e., signed at foot of spine:'Battei leg.' (very slight scuffing to head and foot of spine and lower joint), modern cloth box. Provenance: MARIE LOUISE (of Austria, wife of Napoleon I), EMPRESS OF THE FRENCH, DUCHESS OF PARMA, (1791-1847, binding); Doctor A.Roudinescou (bookplate); exhibited at the Berlin State Library in 1931.

FIRST EDITION, first issue in a rare signed binding from the library assembled by Marie Louise at Parma, by one of only two known Parmigiano binders of the period. Battei worked for Marie Louise from 1824 onwards; his last known binding was executed in 1852.
