NOÉ, Marc-Antoine de (1724-1802, Bishop of Lescar). Discours prononcé dans l'église métropolitaine d'Auch, pour la bénédiction des guidons du Régiment du Roi, Dragons, le 28 Septembre 1781. Pau: P. Daumon, 1781.
4° (247 x 191mm). Collation: [A]-L2. Woodcut title vignette and headpiece. CONTEMPORARY FRENCH 'MILITARY' BINDING BOUND FOR THE COMTE DE VIELLA: red morocco, cover with dentelle border incorporating at the corners and half way up the vertical sides a drum surmounted by crossed guidons or regimental colours, the upper cover with the regimental badge tooled (and lettered 'Régiment du Roi Dragons') above an altar, atop a two-step pedestal, on which a pair of crossed colours rest, the altar lettered 'À Auch 1781', the lower cover with the centrally-placed arms of the Comte de Viella [not in Olivier], flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt fillets, lettered in one, the others with repeat pattern in gilt, including crossed colours, gilt turn-ins, g.e., modern cloth box. Provenance: LOUIS-PIERRE-CHARLES DE LA BAIG, COMTE DE VIELLA (1744-1828, second-in-command of the regiment of Dragoons, binding); Comte Ferdinand de Divonne (1839-1922, great-grandson of the Comte de Viella, armorial bookplate); Charles van der Elst (booklabel).
A VERY FINE 'MILITARY' BINDING. The regiment was commanded by the Marquis de La Fayette who was in America; the reorganisation was therefore undertaken by the second-in-command, the Comte de Viella. The consecration of the colours was carried out by de Viella's uncle, the Bishop of Lescar. This copy was either one of a small number specially bound for high-ranking participants and interested parties, or a presentation copy given by the regiment to their actual (if not titular) commander. Cf. Jean Jadot, Une relieure 'militaire' aux armes du Comte de Viella (in: Le Livre et l'Estampe, No.20, 1959. pp.241-249, with illustration).
