OTTHEINRICH -- BINDING BY JÖRG BERNHARDT, 1550. Covers only, calf over wooden boards (157 x 110mm). In centre panel of upper cover the gilt portrait of Ottheinrich, "Pfalzgrave bey Rhein", dated 1550, within a blind-tooled border; lower cover with his arms and motto (MDZ i.e. Mit der Zeit and OHP i.e. Otto Heinrich Princeps) gilt in central panel, surrounded by a blind-roll. (Lacking clasps, spine very worn), in lined buckram case.
A binding for the greatest German princely book collector of the Renaissance, Ottheinrich (1502-59), Count Palatine of the Rhine, by his court bookbinder Jörg Bernhardt of Görlitz. Bindings from Ottheinrich's library are very rare, as his entire library, together with that of the other Counts and Electors Palatine, was presented to Pope Gregory XV by Maximilian I of Bavaria, following his conquest of Heidelberg.
