SILVER BINDING -- A Bohemian late-18th-century nielloed silver binding. (135 x 76mm). Modern cloth box. Provenance: Moses, son of Rabbi Jacob (binding); Major J.R.Abbey (armorial booklabel on box, collection number 6872).
HEBREW BINDINGS OF NIELLOED SILVER ARE VERY RARE. The covers with a narrow raised and pierced border of cast foliage, the upper cover with an inner border nielloed with rococo scrollwork surrounding a central decoration of a cornucopia of flowers, the lower cover nielloed with in the upper third an irregularly-shaped arch of scroll-work and all-over decoration of trellis and flowerheads, the lower half with two linked pedestals with similar decoration, standing on the pedestals two lions supporting an elaborate oval cartouche surrounded by scrollwork and a grotesque mask, surmounted by a crown, the cartouche inscribed in Hebrew "Moses, the son of the famous Rabbi Jacob. Let God preserve him". The spine in four compartments with raised bands, each decorated to a different pattern of scrolls, flowers and foliage.The binding has early-19th-century Brno control marks.
