CONTEMPORARY LIGHT BROWN CRUSHED LEVANT MOROCCO GILT BY SARAH PRIDEAUX, the covers with a double fillet border enclosing an overall design of wavy lozenge panels, flanked by dots, framing a repeated stylised-lily design, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, the others with a repeated panel design centering on a lily-bud tool, gilt turn-ins, g.e., signed and dated on lower turn-in: S.T.P. 1900 (joints and corners lightly rubbed), modern cloth box.
A fine copy of Spenser's masterpiece from the best-known of the private presses, bound by the foremost English woman binder of her time. Sarah Treverbian Prideaux (1853-1933) trained under Zaehnsdorf and Gruel, and worked with Riviere. The present binding is described by her in her own A Catalogue of Books bound by Sarah T. Prideaux, p.12 & plate 22. She appears to have stopped binding in about 1904. Cf. Nixon Five Centuries 95.
