Geiges describes the Schneider family home as opposite the railway line. Although they did not specialise in images of trains this may have proved a usefully convenient subject. Gail Buckland, in her book First Photographs dates the earliest photograph of a locomotive to 1850 and remarks on how few examples have survived from the early days of photography.
