Lot Essay

The captions and numbers on the backs of the mounts are thought to be those written by Fenton himself, and do not necessarily correspond with the numbers of the same images as they appear on published lists. This group includes the five views which make up the "Panorama of the Country between Inkermann and Balaklava", the three views which comprise "The Panorama of Inkermann", seven views from the eleven-part "Panorama of the Plateau of Sebastopol" corresponding with parts 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11 of the sequence) and one other view of the Plateau of Sebastopol which is a variant of part 2. The ink captions on the backs of the mounts in this group give more details regarding the terrain than do the titles as published.
