Lot Essay

Including portraits of a Burmese princess, daughters of the 'Tindah Minzah', Cachin Ladies attributed to Signor Beato and Company, Sir G. Whyte KCBVC, Mrs. Martini and her servants, the 'Tindah Minzah' on his deathbead, a group portrait of native officers, several images of the Pooway dancing for Prince Albert Victor, the troops in formation, a crucifixion scene, a view of the prisoners outside the jail at 'Myorjyan', a dramatic image of the P&O Mail in a storm, the Duke on a butterfly hunt with elephants, and native girls at their toilet. The four Prussian blue prints show views and a group portrait of native boys.

Prince Albert Victor visited Burma in 1889 when Felice Beato is known to have been there. A comparison with three albums in the collection of the India Office including photographs by Beato, would strongly suggest that the majority of the photographs are by Beato. Several images in this album are from the same negatives as those in the India Office collection where one album has printed descriptive labels attributing the photographs to Beato. A few of the images in the collection, of the Pooway dancing for the Duke of Clarence are dated Dec. 26th, 1889.
