In the late 1880s Frederick Evans, who was not content with the straight architectural studies of the time, began to photograph the interiors of English cathedrals in a style that became distinctly his own. Evans would spend weeks in his chosen cathedral studying the light and shade and its effect on the architectural and spiritual qualities of the building. The art critic of the Boston Evening Transcript, reviewing an exhibition of his work 21 Feb. 1903, wrote "Mr. Evans's favourite pictorial arrangement for a church interior is a look from a shadowed place, between clustered columns, into a lighted part of the cathedral. With some slight variations he plays upon this theme with wonderful results..."
