Lot Essay

From 1894 Louis Lumière had become interested in the animated image. Through his experimentation he perfected a mechanism known as the "cinématographe" for which he took out a patent on 13th February 1895. The cinématographe was a simple and efficient apparatus for taking and reproducing serial pictures in which, for the first time the perforated film strip was held and moved by a gripper. In 1895 the Lumière brothers held their first public cinématographe show at the Grand Café in Paris. This was to be an overwhelming success and introduced the advance of the modern motion picture technique.
