The firm Artisti Barovier, under the guidance of Giuseppe Barovier, was renowned for its fine and complex creations using the murrhine technique in the early years of this century, and their work received wide critical acclaim at the many exhibitions at which they were represented. In 1919 the company changed its name to Vetreria Artistica Barovier, and Giuseppe's involvement in the company diminished, giving way to the more modern abstract creations of his nephews Nicolo and Ercole.
The present vase is typical in its application of murrhine technique during this early period under Giuseppe's influence, but exceptionally rare in its incorporation of clearly defined animal forms. The monogram AB for Artisti Barovier dates it to pre-1919.
The present vase will be included in the forthcoming publication Murano, 1900 Glass and Glass Makers, Bocca, Milano, currently in preparation by Franco Deboni, to whom we are grateful for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
For other examples of work by Giuseppe Barovier from the same period, see: Rosa Barovier Mentash. Venetian Glass 1890 - 1990, Italy, 1994, p.46 et seq.
