Lot Essay

The design of this cocktail shaker has until recently been incorrectly attributed to Marianne Brandt. However, the original drawing for the cocktail shaker has been traced and is now in a private collection in Sweden, and Ms. Stave herself acknowledged before her recent death that this was indeed her own design.
Silvia Stave (1908 -1994) was undoubtedly influenced by Constructivism and the Bauhaus style, although she later maintained that her preference for spherical forms originated from a friendship with a Swedish artist and not from the Bauhaus. Her work was frequently exhibited at the Leipzig Trade Fair in the 1930s by her employer C.G. Hallberg, whose director, Gustav Hallberg was quick to recognise her talent. She was soon promoted to Director of Design at Hallberg's, and examples of her work were shown at the International Exhibition Paris in 1937.
An example of the present design appears in a C.G. Hallberg catalogue of the 1930, model no. 8741.
We are grateful to Ulrich Fiedler for drawing our attention to the most recent research on this artist.
