Lot Essay

O'Conor often visited Montigny-sur-Loing and Grez-sur-Loing in the countryside outside Paris, presumably to visit his fellow artists working in this area. He was still working at Pont-Aven at this time but by the autumn of 1902 he was painting at Montigny. A particular feature of this area was a number of small dams or weirs across the river, and O'Conor painted a group of landscapes of this subject, a number of which were painted on the spot.
