Walter Osborne spent part of 1883 in Brittany, working at Quimperlé, Pont-Aven and Dinan. He may have visited Dinan in the companionship of Joseph Malachy Kavanagh who painted an almost identical picture, but on a slightly larger scale, entitled The Old Convent Gate, Dinan. This was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy a year later and is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin.
