Founded in this country in 1896, Daimler is one of the few companies that can justifiably claim to have been one of the pioneers of the motor car, being involved from the very birth of the industry. The styling of the Victorian Daimlers was quite clearly from an earlier period and the cars were, in effect, true horseless carriages. These cars were, of course, relatively crude but well constructed and by 1897 the company was making twin cylinder 4hp and 6hp cars. The quality of these early Daimlers was soon recognised by many of the aristocracy and HRH The Prince of Wales took delivery of his first Daimler, a twin cylinder 6hp model, in the summer of 1900. From then on Daimler became a Royal car.

The TS38 model was in production from 1908 to 1913, costing £570 in 1908 rising to £625 in 1912. In 1984 the Veteran Car Club provided a provisional dating letter for the present owner confirming that this example is a 1912 motor car; it is known that Daimler chassis 11171, fifty cars later, was made in 1913. A fabulous and very unusual Salmons full cabriolet body was fitted allowing the car to be open or closed like a limousine and landaulette. It appears that this Daimler was shipped from Liverpool in 1912 to India, where it remained until repatriated in the early 1980's; a tax disc found on the car denotes "1942 Karachi", with registration KAR 2351!

The motor car is now in need of a full restoration although this process has been started, the chassis having been cleaned and painted a few years ago; the road wheels have been rebuilt with new spokes and tyres are now fitted. The engine is currently filled with flushing oil (so will require changing before starting) but turns over and operation of the gear lever shows the gearbox internals to be free; the front and rear axles are original and there is a copper petrol tank. The bodywork is sound although the hood is in poor condition and has now been removed (the present owner will supply two new hood leathers), there is a full set of lamps, a brass luggage grid and an original hand pressure pump.

It is sold with its original set of interior fittings, such as the lovely ivory door handles and the pegs and runners for the windows, together with their braided pull straps.

This imposing Edwardian Daimler is the only such vehicle known to the Veteran Car Club and will make a fascinating restoration project.
