Each piece variously painted with tall buildings, pagodas and retreats in riverscapes within brocade, trellis, hatched and other geometric borders, all reserved on gilt grounds, comprising:
Two oblong octagonal tureens, a pair of covers, and two stands, one handle ear chipped, one stand cracked, the tureens 12½in. (32cm.) wide
An oblong octagonal dish, 20in. (51cm.) wide
An oval dish, 19¾in. (50.5cm.) wide
An oval dish, repaired, 16¼in. (41cm.) wide
A pair of oval hot-water dishes, 15¼in.(38.5cm.) wide
A pair of circular hot-water dishes, chipped, one side damaged, 14in. (36cm.) wide,
some gilding rubbed

Lot Essay

This service was probably honey-gilt in Europe as soon as it arrived from China. The most likely place this gilding was done is Augsburg in Germany, where 18th Century Meissen blue and white services were treated in the same way.
