Each of silver shape, with a quatrefoil bracket-lobed foot, finely enamelled on each segment with blue ribbons entwined with rose scrolls and enclosing iron-red and yellow flower-heads and floral motifs, separated by horizontal bands en grisaille, stems restuck, some fritting

Lot Essay

These candlesticks are very similarly decorated to a service made for D. José Ribeiro da Fonseca Figueiredo e Sousa, who was Bishop of Oporto (under the name of D. Fr. José Maria da Fonseca e Evora). Cf. N. de Castro, op.cit.,, p.88 where a dish with the Fonseca arms is illustrated
