Lot Essay

The arms are those of Dom Luís Peregrino de Ataíde, 10th Count of Atouguia, of the Council of King João V, Governor and Captain-General of the Algarve, 6th Viceroy of Brazil from 1749 to 1755. He was born in 1700, married Dona Clara Assis Mascarenhas, daughter of the 2nd Count of Óbidos in 1720, and died in 1758.

There are at least seven known services made in the early 18th Century bearing these arms and crest, all variously decorated but in similar Imari/famille verte palettes. Although it has been suggested that these services were made for the Italian family, Marini, see David Howard and John Ayers, op.cit., vol. II, pp.450 and 451, Nuno de Castro is convinced that these services were in fact made for the Ataíde family. See N. de Castro, op.cit., pp.53 - 61, where all the services for this family are illustrated.
