Lot Essay

The arms are those of Cosme Damião Pinto Pereira, of Lisbon, who was Captain-General and Governor of Macao from 1735 to 1738 and from 1743 to 1747. This is one of three services known to have been made for this family. Cf. N. de Castro, op.cit., pp.78-80 where all three services are illustrated. Cf. also D. S. Howard and J. Ayers, op.cit., vol.II, p.381, no.375, where the authors illustrate a dish from one of the other services and also a very rare pair of enamelled coppper goblets bearing these arms.
A plate with these arms was sold in Monaco, 18 June 1988, lot 1485
