Lot Essay

For a very similar plate, cf. F. et N. Hervouët et Y. Bruneau, op.cit., p.178, no.7.106. The authors also illustrate on p.126, nos. 6.36 and 6.37, two uninscribed plates with different borders, but with a very similar central scene to the present plate, but omitting the seated figure.
A pair of identical plates from the H. M. Knight Collection was sold in London, 12 May 1970, lot 127. A single very similar plate, but inscribed Wouterverhage, also dated 1752, was sold in these Rooms, 1 November 1993, lot 150
