Further details
This pattern of squab-cushioned chair with hermed legs and fretted-splats relates to parlour chairs illustrated in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co's. Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guides 1788-94. This splat pattern, centred by a flowered tablet features on a chair sketch in the 1793 Estimate book of Gillows of Oxford Street, London and Lancaster; while the japanned ornament of ribbon-tied laurels is also typical fo their work (see L.Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995 fig. 278). Part of this Parham suite, comprising six armchairs, was sold Christie's King Street 21 April 1966, lot 126
