Lot Essay

It was not until he was over fifty that Peter Scott first visited Antarctica, having determined at an early age that he would make his way in life without trading on the reputation of his explorer father, Captain Scott. Subsequently, however, he made a number of trips, always recording the wildlife he saw in his diary, and sometimes working these drawings up in to oil paintings when he returned to his studio.
These Antarctic Petrels are frequently seen in the Ross Sea, sometimes congregating in large flocks over rich fishing grounds, where they dip into the water for small fish and krill.
