Thorburn moved to London in 1885, then to Hascombe, Surrey in 1902, where he lived for the rest of his life. Most of his pheasant and woodcock pictures of 1902 onwards are painted in Surrey, but he returned each year to Gaick, Inverness-shire in the Highlands of Scotland, to study and record the hare, red deer, eagle, grouse and ptarmigan.
