Lot Essay

These candelabra are possibly derived from a design which is thought to have been included in the catalogue of the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et.al. Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 283, fig. 4.14.4), now in the Musée des Arts des Décoratifs..
Identical female figures feature on a set of four candelabra in the Wallace Collection (F.J.B. Watson, Wallace Collection Catalogues, Furniture, London, 1986, p. 90, plate 18, F 142).
A further pair, executed in marble from the collection of the Earl of Rosebery, at Mentmore Towers, Buckingham, sold Sotheby's house sale, 18-20 May 1977, lot 243.
