Each of oval form, the lift-off top surmounted by a recumbent Borzoi, the gadrooned base supported on four lion monopodiae and mounted with four rams' masks, the interior fitted with a pair of inkwells and a further central well, one with concealed stamp beneath the Borzoi MESSENGER PUBLISHED MAR 6TH 1850, one lacking ceramic inkwell liners

Lot Essay

Primarily known as makers of lamps, the firm of Thomas Messenger & Sons was established during the first quarter of the 19th Century. They had premises in London and Birmingham and produced catalogues of their works.
