Lot Essay

One from a pair of commodes, with identical floral marquetry inlay, by E. Zwiener, is illustrated in C. Payne's 19th Century European Furniture, Woodbridge, 1886, p. 146.
E. Zwiener established his business at 12 rue de la Roquette, Paris in 1880. He produced furniture to the highest quality, with fine marquetry and gilt-bronze mounts. This present example, with its delicate inlay of flowers and the unusual caryatid corner mounts is a superb example of his oeuvre. He occasionally stamped the reverse of his mounts Zw.
