Mignon, an opera by Ambroise Thomas, was first produced in Paris in 1866. The eponymous heroine of the story is a beautiful young maiden kidnapped in childhood from her father's castle by a band of wandering gypsies. The story was a popular subject in painting and sculpture, with Mignon usually portrayed as a beautiful shy maiden holding a mandolin or bouquet of flowers.
