2° (463 x 360mm). 22 mounted chromolithographic plates, finished by hand, by J.G.Keulemans after Keulemans and H.Leutemann, illustrations. Original pictorial green cloth gilt (corners bumped, head and foot of spine chipped).

FIRST EDITION, limited to 170 copies, of this "handsome, useful and basic work" (Mengel). 15 of the species figured were drawn from life in 1872 in the Amsterdam Zoo, by Heinrich Leutemann under the supervision of G.F. Westermann, the zoo's director and founder. The idea of writing the monograph was Westermann's, but he died in 1890, before his plan could be carried out.
