MARTINET, François Nicolas. Histoire des Oiseaux, peints dans tous leurs aspects... Paris: chez l'auteur, 1787-1796.

8 volumes in 9, (8° (219 x 136mm). Half-titles, 9 fine hand-coloured additional titles and 470 (of 474?) fine hand-coloured engraved plates by Martinet, including 462 ornithological plates and 8 allegorical scenes. Near-contemporary marbled boards, morocco lettering-pieces on spines, uncut (spines faded, extremities a trifle rubbed, recased). Provenance: H.Bradley Martin (booklabels, sale Sothebys New York, June 7 1989, lot 156).

AN EARLY EDITION OF "A VERY RARE AND VERY CHARMING" WORK (Cottrell). The plates show a highly original approach to ornithological illustration: they often include architectural backgrounds (the peacock with tail spread perching on a roof, barn owls in a courtyard) and occasionally the birds are shown against contemporary interiors (a white crested cockatoo perches on the arm of a wall-light with decorative wall-paper in the background). The colouring is particularly delicate with occasional heightening in gilt where required, and with some of the backgrounds supplied in pure watercolour, without an engraved base. The work was issued erratically in parts over a number of years and complete copies are therefore particularly scarce. G.W.Cottrell "Contemporary collectors.. Bradley Martin, The Ornithological Collection" in The Book Collector, Autumn 1963, p.322 (plate 2); Nissen IVB 598. (9)
