A FINE SELECTION FROM THIS FAMOUS SERIES OF ILLUSTRATED BROADSHEETS, comprising issues for the years 1716-1726, 1728, 1730-1748, 1749 (printed without the calendar), 1750-1766, 1768-1772, 1774-1792, 1794-1796, 1798-1802, 1805. The almanacs were commissioned by Oxford University Press who, together with Cambridge University, held the royal privilege for almanac production. They provide an invaluable guide to the development of taste, and illustrate the history of English art of the period. The present selection starts with the work of Michael Burghers, who executed most of the early designs and engravings up until 1728. He was succeeded by George Vertue, who changed the subjects of the illustrations to topographical views of the Colleges. Vertue retired in 1751 and was followed by John Green, who again revived the allegorical subjects. From 1766, however, the spirit of illustration changed entirely to the topographical, often executed by artists of considerable ability. Outstanding were Edward and Michael Rooker, who made the drawings and engraved the plates each year up to 1788, when other outside artists were commissioned. From 1797 to 1814 the engraver was James Basire. Sold as a periodical not subject to return.
