A Meissen figure of a Saxon grenadier
Circa 1745
Modelled by P. Reinicke and J.J. Kändler, wearing a uniform of high peaked gilt hat with crowned AR monogram, red-lined green coat over a red jacket, white breeches and spats and black boots, a pouch and a sword fixed to his belt, holding a musket at his right side, standing before a tree-stump on a square base (restoration to hat, left hand and sword scabbard, muzzle of musket broken, hilt of sword broken and restored), blue crossed swords mark at back

Lot Essay

This figure is probably from the set of toy soldiers given by Frederick the Great to Grand Duke Peter, the son of Elisabeth of Russia. See Rainer Rückert, op. cit., figs. 932-3, and Len and Yvonne Adams, op. cit., p. 41.

A similar figure was sold in these Rooms on 6 October 1986, lot 150 and another on 14 June 1994, lot 169. Part of a set of these soldiers were sold in these Rooms on 4 October 1971, lot 139.
