Lot Essay

Company painting never developed on a large scale in Western India. Occasionally a European would employ an Indian artist to carry out private commissions, but this was not commonplace in the Western regions. It was not until the mid 19th Century that sets of pictures depicting trades and castes were regularly produced in Western India and sold in Bombay, Poona and Belgaum.
