Lot Essay

This watercolour can be dated from 1820-1830 as the infantry marching along the riverside are wearing red coats, which were changed to grey after 1830. On the far left of the watercolour St. Peter's Church (consecrated 1828) can be seen, and to the right of this is the Ochterlony monument which was built in 1828, and to the far left is the Royal Barracks. In the foreground army recruits can be seen alighting from palanquins and making their way to the barracks.
